Enigma is a baton twirling team based in Melksham. The team have a wealth of experience, and are now training at the Manor School on a Thursday evening 5pm to 8pm with athletes starting from four years and up. Due to the success of the troupe the team have also started training in the BA postal code region on a Friday evening 5-7pm at Stratton on the Fosse, Village Hall.
The team was set up by Tanya Denning–Kuijper in May 2011, with the intention of being a senior elite team and travelling across the UK and possibly Europe to take part in different competitions. However, because the majority of the larger associations require at least eight people per team it was decided to keep to local association SITA (Southern Independent Twirling Association). The troupe competed at competitions held in Trowbridge and then decided as a team to develop and open up the club to the next generation. In June 2012 Enigma opened the doors to the people of Melksham and welcomed many new starters. Our dedicated members now range from four years of age up to some of 20+ years.
The troupe now competes under RDTA (Rhythmic Dance Twirl Association) and has had some incredible results over the past couple of years with many top 3 podium places being obtained not only in team events, but also in solo and duet sections too.
DBS checked and first aid trained, with over 30 years’ experience in twirling to include winning a European title, Tanya has the drive and enthusiasm that will hopefully inspire individuals to push themselves and be the best in what they want to achieve. Lucy Banks and Alisha Kelsey also assist with the training and general running of the troupe, along with Sam Howard (Treasurer), and Fundraising Head - Kirstie Cardoza; who help glue the backbone of the troupe together, along with our fantastic committee and troupe helpers/members, they have all helped to create the incredible foundation and support network that is (as we proudly call it) The Enigma Family. We even have some very dedicated members that make a 40+ mile round trip each week to be part of the team and support events here in Melksham - now that is dedication and something to be proud of!
Baton twirling is a sport like no other - it teaches so many different disciplines, including military, pom, and twirling. The sport is really versatile as it mixes dance, gymnastics and baton twirling all together, and what you would generally see at carnivals is just a snippet of what really goes on behind the scenes. Children of a young age have seen huge improvement not only in hand eye co-ordination, but also motor skills, cross-over ability, flexibility and confidence.
Since bringing the team to Melksham we are proud of the achievements and progression the troupe has made; not only of the awards we’ve won as a troupe, but those who have achieved many personal goals, to include one member who has now gone on and is competing with a fellow team with NBTA (National Baton Twirling Association) and has not only represented England in the pom pon team at the Europeans in Italy 2016, she has also now got a National Title under her belt!! We are so proud.
As Enigma run as a non-profit organisation and is run 100% by volunteers we cannot thank several organisations enough for supporting and making amazing contributions to the troupe. Including the town councils, and general public of Melksham, who have given us some great support at bag packs and fundraising events that we have hosted, which we are all truly thankful for. Without your continued support Enigma would not be where we are today and for that we are so grateful – Thank you!
Enigma train on a Thursday 5pm to 7.30pm (Winter months) then to 9pm (Summer months) at the Manor School in Melksham. We also train one Sunday a month for additional team training or to work on solo and duet performances - this is dependent on uptake and venue availability.
The BA region train on a Friday at Stratton on teh Fosse Village Hall 5-6pm (winter months) then to 7pm summer months. Again we hold additional weekend training for solo and duet practice.
Due to the troupe growth and members ages and ability the sessions are split as follows:
Training is FREE for your first 'taster' session, with weekly fees being £4 per week. (There are reductions for additional siblings)
There is also an annual fee that is requested, which helps to cover the costs of insurance, and troupe fete costume. All details about fees, costumes and kit are all explained in the membership pack which is issued when you come along for your 'taster' session.
